THE PLOT
Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, a green skinned witch who has been neglected all her life by her father. She accompanies her sister Nessarose to Shiz University. Her handicapped younger sister was supposed to start a new life at the school, but Elphaba was discovered by headmistress Madame Morrible. With the headmistress’ encouragement, Elphaba was also enrolled. Elphaba is now also living a new life at the University and there she meets the beautiful and popular Galinda. They became room mates but quickly despised each other due to their differences. The two eventually hit it off as room mates but many things challenge their friendship, such as having the same love interest and Elphaba discovering that the Wizard is not what he seems. Will Elphaba find her fate as the Wicked Witch of the West? And what happens to her friendship with Galinda? Find out when you catch the Wicked at the Music Hall this summer!
BACKGROUND
Wicked premiered in 2003 on Broadway after a San Francisco trial run the same year. The Broadway production featured leading stars Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenowith. The music and lyrics were written by Stephen Schwartz with a storyline by Tony winning playwright Winnie Holzmann. Wicked also credits New York Times Bestselling author Greogry Maguire for writing the original novel Wicked. Moreover, the creative team has been one of the most iconic line ups of the greatest minds in theater as it also features amazing work by Tony Award winning creatives such as Wayne Cilento on musical staging and choreography, Eugene Lee on scenic design, and Susan HIlferty on costume. Sound design was also courtesy of Tony Meola, with Elain McCarthy on projection, and Tom Watson and Joe Dulude on hair, wig, and makeup.
“If every music had the brains, heart and courage of Wicked. Broadway really would be a magical place.” – Time Magazine
During its first Broadway run, Wicked bagged three Tony Awards including Best Actress in Musical for Idina Menzel, Best Scenic Design and Best Costume. Over at the Drama Desk Awards, the musical scored seven victories, while also securing four awards at the Outer Critics Circle Award. In 2005, Wicked went on tour for the first time and the following year, the touring production scored every Carbonell Award they were nominated for.
