The hit-making virtuoso who brought Godspell and Pippin to the world has now breathed life into audience-favorite Wicked, which comes to Music Hall At Fair Park for the spring playbill.
Wicked cleverly weaves political themes, distinctive heroes, and improbable love within a medley of catchy showtunes, including Defying Gravity, which has taken Broadway by storm.
The tale follows Elphaba, the illegitimate daughter of the wife of Munchkinland’s governor. Despite her familial and identity issues, Elphaba makes it into the respected Shiz University, where she bunks with social butterfly Galinda. Two complete opposites don't take to each other at first but soon become allies.
After a while, things go downhill when Elphaba notices heinous acts against the Animals, a sentient race often targeted by oppressive forces. Galinda and Elphaba go to the Wizard for help, but the Wizard unfortunately offers little assistance. A unsatisfied Elphaba leaves the Emerald City to fight for the Animals, leaving Galinda and her studies at Shiz University behind.
Meanwhile, Galinda(Glinda) marries Fiyero, the Captain of the Guard, and pursues an aristocratic lifestyle. Elphaba unwittingly earns Fiyero’s admiration as he falls in love with her. Will the couple’s love grow unburdened, or will Elphaba’s political drive push Fiyero away, distance her from friends, and ruin her?
Wicked kicked off its first live performance 20 years ago at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre. As its influence spread, it broke into new locations year after year, receiving international acclaim with performances in London, Ireland, Mexico, Germany, and even Australia.
